Banging on about "The Beat Club"
The Beat Club is all about bringing the 1960's Mod club feel to York. Initially making its debut at The Clarence Club in York with two rooms the Mod nite moved to The Victoria Vaults on Nunnery Lane about 10 minutes walk from York Railway station.
The policy has, and always will be, to play 60's Mod tunes [Mod bands, Northern Soul, Jazz, R&B, Ska and Latin Soul] on original vinyl and create the exclusive and underground vibe of clubs, frequented by Mods, back in the 60's.
There is plenty of room to dance, drink, socialise or just chill and look cool.
To make the nite even cooler, it is free entry and the venue is heavily Mod themed.
"The Birth Of "Flipside"!
So glad to have had a chat with Dan Guest who suggested the idea of pooling our resources and creating a York Mod Collective to stage some regular and different events around the region. It was then just a matter of contacting like-minded dj's to ask if they thought there was potential in such a concept and if they would be interested in getting involved.
Needless to say that the response was overwhelming and incredibly positive. I had conversations with Dekka, Gary Brown and Stuart who all felt the idea was brilliant and that we needed to meet to discuss the concept, branding and venues and the kind of events we wanted to stage and promote.
We meet for our brainstorming session at Jaipur Spice on Haxby Road in York and whilst eating and drinking came up with a couple of concepts and thoughts on venues. The first was to be a Sunday afternoon chill-out at Jaipur itself. Hence "Flipside" was born!
It was to be more of Mod influenced event thus allowing us to play all manner of styles of music, both old and new and to focus on being incredibly stylised with a sharp attitude in all we do. Well, that at least is the intention. We will leave you to be the judge.
